Residency Programs

The ACGME requires residency training programs to provide structured education in the areas of risk management, medical jurisprudence, confidentiality, record keeping and professional liability. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to locate reliable resources on these topics and even harder to assemble a structured curriculum.

In order to assist programs in meeting these obligations, we have created a medical-legal “Core Curriculum.”  The material satisfies the ACGME requirements and covers medical-legal topics that are common to all physicians.

  • The Doctor-Patient Relationship,
  • The Standard of Care,
  • Informed Consent & The Right to Refuse Medical Treatment,
  • Better Documentation,
  • Proper Prescribing, and
  • HIPAA.

The material consists of studio quality, audio CD presentations, along with accompanying outlines, reference materials and boards-style quizzes. They can be used for individual study, but would also fit the format of a small group conference. The material is available in hard copy or on-line and can be purchased either as entire curriculum or by individual module.

Hospitals

The Joint Commission’s 2007 Medical Staff Standards require facilities to continuously monitor physician performance in six categories. Some of these categories depart from traditional patient care requirements by including the areas of risk management, medical jurisprudence, confidentiality, record keeping and professional liability. In addition, the Joint Commission’s Pain Management Standards raise medical-legal concerns related to balancing the adequate treatment of pain with the risk of controlled substance misuse.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to locate reliable resources that can be used to assess competency in these areas and even more difficult to find something that physicians will enjoy. The problems are compounded by the fact that it is not possible to accomplish all of these Standards with lectures and live presentations. In order to assist facilities in meeting these obligations, we have created educational materials which address each of these areas. The materials are available in hard copy or on-line, can be purchased on behalf of one user or an entire institution, and are CME accredited. To assist in demonstrating compliance with the Standards, provider progress with each activity can be readily tracked and reported.
