The legal medicine curriculum was authored by Victor R. Cotton, MD, Esquire. Dr. Cotton practiced and taught medicine as an internist for seven years and has been a practicing healthcare attorney for fifteen years, representing physicians in a variety of medical-legal situations.
He has also given more than 1000 medical-legal educational presentations to physicians in forty-two different states. Through these experiences, Dr. Cotton has developed a unique ability to present complex issues in a legally accurate and clinically sound manner.
Our materials use a "pathophysiologic" approach to the legal issues which physicians face. Although the individual elements of the curriculum can be used in any order, it is assembled in a "building block" manner. There are seven "core" topics, each of which is comprised of audio and written materials. These core concepts are then used to develop more advanced modules, which are presented in written format.
The material draws examples from many aspects of medicine so that every physician can relate to the applicable principles. All of the material was created by Dr. Cotton and it reflects his ability to distill complex medical-legal issues into simple principles that can be applied at the bedside.
